Getting to Green and Getting to God?

This year the “going green” push is big on college campuses and the theme has caught a lot of attention with corporations who are really making this a push in their advertising and marketing efforts.  Four years ago, this topic of green was just starting to emerge, but it was still on the outside fringe of popularity.  Today, “going green” has hit our society in a huge way.   The Oscars went green, the Superbowl went green, major league baseball is going green, TV, tourism, hotels, Microsoft, Dell, Walmart, restaurants, airlines, clothing, grocery stores, major retailers, construction companies and yes even coffins. As I pondered this idea of “going green”, I started getting a bit annoyed at the magnitude of the whole thing.  Don’t get me wrong, I think these things are great ideas and certainly we as responsible human beings need to be doing them to preserve our environment.  What I am annoyed about is the passion, attention and public space this is getting.  Just think about it, we have given more of our time, talent and treasure (dollars) to preserve the environment then to things with eternal value.  What I am struggling with is the thought of how one movement gets such attention and popularity while other movements get no attention or resources at all.

Could you imagine the effect we could have on the moral and spiritual stability of this world if everyone was just as passionate about saving unborn life instead of a tree, visiting a church instead of a recycling center, protesting abortion instead of animal cruelty, joining a small group instead of joining an environmental group, investing in a needy child instead of planting a tree, finding out how to dispose of sin in our lives instead of finding out how to dispose of hazardous waste, stop buying drugs and alcohol instead of aerosol, or creating a safe, healthy home environment for our children instead of creating a compost pile.

Again, I am not advocating choosing one or the other, God or Green. I am, however, advocating that as Christians we should make sure the things that are important to God get the same time, talent and treasure from us as do secular movements. Just imagine if the items I am talking about above received the same passion, attention and public space as the “going green” initiative. Wow, could you imagine how people, families and our communities would be affected? Feel free to go green, but go God as well.

Wow! This blog makes an excellent point, and I also believe that it highlights one of the greatest weapons that Satan has ever had in his arsenal – distraction. He likes to fill our lives with things that keep us from what really matters, and he does this with unparalleled proficiency both to the lost and the redeemed.

I pray to God that we overcome this devilish scheme so that we as a society can choose that which will bring hope to a hopeless world. Indeed, may we begin to choose” going God” over “going green”, and “overcoming spiritual darkness” over “overcoming global warming”. May we as a church also be aware of this enemy when it comes to internal issues in our congregations and learn that winning the lost and following God’s will is more important than having our own way.

Thanks again for an excellent blog and God bless you.
