Intex Pool and Secur-Net Cover

Well over the last few weeks I put up the kids pool.  We bought an Intex above ground pool that is 48″ x 18′ (which I DO NOT recommend).  We bought it last September at Sam’s Club for a Christmas gift for the kids.  We only paid $279, which is huge considering this year they are $379 for the exact same pool.  Anyway, I have had some serious reservations about getting a pool with 4 children ages 3-8.  Anyway, I went to Toys R Us and found a product called Secur-Net that makes covers that lock so the kids cannot access the pool.  Click “Read More” to see the picture, this is our exact pool set up.

When we put up the pool, we had 2 small holes that were already in the liner upon purchase.  I know this because they were right where the liner was folded and creased for packing.  Of course, you don’t know this until you start to fill it up with water.  We called Intex, and the customer service was horrible.  The lady was rude, not helpful and seemed like we were bothering her for calling.  Needless to say, they did absolutely nothing for us, not even a call back from the supervisor who was to respond in 24-48 hours.  We went back to Sam’s Club and they were generous enough to give us $80 off for our troubles and lost money on having to drain the pool to fix the holes.  When you buy a product that was clearly damaged upon purchase and the manufacture, in this case Intex, was willing to do nothing…it will be the last dime I ever spend on an Intex product.  In fact, I won’t even link to their site because I do not recommend them.

Intex Pool and Secur-Net Cover

The Secur-Net product from Toys R Us has been a great purchase so far.  It was easy to install, secured very snug to the side of the pool and seems to be durable enough to do the job.  I will keep you posted on how it holds up this summer and next.  The bottom portion secures to the white pool legs, the top portion is zipped closed and secured with a lock, that way the cover will not sink and wrap around someone on top of it.  It has an inflatable center to allow the rain to run off and provide additional security if someone was to fall on top of it.  Of course, I hope none of my children ever test it out, but it does say it will support up to 550lbs.

I also added a temporary fence around the entire pool that is about 6′ from the pool edges.  I did not want a permanent fence as that would look silly with a cheesy pool like Intex.  I installed the green metal fence polls that you can hang a 4-5′ wire fence to.  That way I can put the fence up between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and remove the other 8 months of the year.  I also secured the fence about 2″ above the grass line so I could weed eat under it.  Nothing looks worse then long grass along a fence line.

Funny! We bought the exact same pool, the same size, the same place, the same time, for the same price. This pool has been nothing but a problem. It took several times of setting up, not having a level enough ground, taking it down so the pool was not leaning, moving and re-setting up. We never liked this pool from the moment we finally got it up. Although it seemed like my husband was constantly testing and treating the water, we could never get it right for more than a couple days. We believe that the filter that comes with this pool is not the appropriate size. We came to find out that the appropriate size filter would cost more than the pool. Additionally, for some reason I just never felt safe with my kids (3 little ones) in this pool. We almost never used this pool. Finally, my husband got sick of dealing with it and drained it for a couple of months. He then decided he would try to take on the pool one more time, only to find out that the pool had become brittle and had so many cracks in it it could not be repaired. No where in the manual does it say you cannot drain it without it falling apart. We tried to contact Intex hoping that they would help, considering we only got a few months of use out of it, and they were so rude. They basically told us tuff, but if we wanted to buy a $350.00 pool liner they would be happy to sell us that. We ended up throwing the pool away. We then went and bought a smaller (16′x42′) soft sided pool (Summer Escapes). Which at first I wasn’t thrilled about(smaller and a blow up ring around the top). But this pool has turned out to be perfect. Being not as deep may not be as good for my husband and I, but is perfect for the kids. We didn’t fill it up all the way (about a foot short which looks fine because the pool only stands as tall as you fill it), which is perfect for my 2 year old because now he can stand on his toes-which makes me feel so much better. The water in this pool is perfect-my husband is freed! The set up was soooo easy. Plus, if you have to have an above ground pool it really looks so much nicer.
