Kennedy Racing Team, AWANA Grand Prix (Pinewood Derby)

March 9th was the Annual AWANA Grand Prix (Pinewood Derby Race).  This is the first year my kids have participated in one of these races.  I did them a few years back when I was involved with AWANA’s as a leader.

Okay, enough about how good the cars look.  Three cars race down the track at one time per heat.  There were over 100 cars entered in 4 categories. 

1. Puggles/Cubbies
2. Sparks
3. TNT – (older kids)
4. Adults

We entered three cars: the Princess 44 car in Puggles/Cubbies, the Spiderman 95 car in the Sparks and the Dora 14 car in the adult race. Let me explain the Dora theme for my adult race. My 2 year old, Reganne, wanted a car just like her brother and sister; so being the caring parent I am, I selflessly gave up my Virginia Tech, ACC theme for her Dora theme. I figured she would play with it more when it was all over than I would.

Anyway, Peyton with her Princess 44 car took first place for speed in the Puggles/Cubbies race.

Dawson’s 95 Spiderman car placed 6th.

Reganne’s 14 Dora car took first place for speed in the adult race.

Peyton’s Princess 44 car raced 6 heats with 6 first place finishes.

Dawson’s 95 Spiderman car raced 3 heats with 1 first place finishes and 2 second place finishes.

Reganne’s 14 Dora car raced 6 heats with 6 first place finishes.

Overall, Kennedy Racing Team ran 15 heats with 13 first place finishes and 2 second place finishes.

The funny thing is, I raced our 3 cars against each other four times the day before the race when I checked them in, and Dawson’s 95 Spiderman car won all 4 races.
